Noun clauses.

A noun clause is a clause we can use like a noun or noun phrase as the object of a verb. We can introduce noun clause with that or what.

That-clauses

Wh-clauses.

We can use noun clauses beginning with

We can use noun clauses beginning with

that (that-clauses) after verbs used to

wh-words such as what, where and how

report thoughts (1) and feelings (2). We

(wh-clauses) after verbs used to report

50

also use that-clauses to report statements in indirect speech (3).

1 People used to believe that the earth was flat.

2 Dо уои ever feel that уои might be in danger?

3 He mentioned that he had seen the report.

We can also use that-clauses after nouns and adjectives.

4 I was faced with the problem that I had no money.

In informal situations, we often use noun clauses without that, especially after the verbs know, say and think.

5 I knew (that) you'd finish first.

We usually include that in formal uses (6), after nouns (7), and when а phrase (8) or а clause (9) comes between the verb and the that-clause.

6 A recent government study has concluded that drug use among adolescents is declining.

7 А contract is а written agreement that уои and/or others will do something.

8 They discovered during the investigation that some money was missing.

9 Sheila forgot when the meeting was and that she was supposed to unlock the door for us.

We must include that (= 'the fact that') when we use а that-clause as subject.

10 That Juliet loved him was never in

thoughts and questions (11). Like indirect questions, wh-clauses have the subject before the verb and по question mark (12).

11 I wonder what it means. They don' t know where he went. Не asked how often we studied.

12 1can'1 understand what she is saying.

We can use wh-clauses, but not thatclauses, after prepositions.

13 Не disagreed with what we said. I read about how he did it.

We can also begin noun clauses with if and whether after verbs used to report 'not knowing' or an indirect yes/nо question (14). We use if/whether when we are not sure (15) about the information expressed in the noun clause and that when we are sure (16).

14 I can' t remember if/whether I locked the door.

15 Was he married? Магу didn'1 know.

Маrу didn'1 know if/whether he was married.

16 Не was married. But Магу didn'1 know. →Маrу didn' t know that he was married.
