The Fairyking

The king of the fairies was a man of great age, and wise because he knew of his ignorance. To help him rule well, he chose twenty fairies, men-fairies and women-fairies, who were of even greater age than him, and who were wise because they knew of their ignorance. Under this wise rule, the fairies lived in peace and safety for long years.

The king had a son, a man who gained much knowledge from his father and his father's advisors, but who had not yet learned of his own ignorance. Thus, his knowledge only increased his pride, and so increased his foolishness.

A day came when, confident in his skills and cunning, he ventured beyond the borders of his father's kingdom, into a dark and evil place - a forest under the rule of a great dragon, who had for many years threatened the fairy kingdom.

The prince had gone only a little way into the forest when he began to hear evil laughter and hissing voices around him. In his pride and anger, he left the path he was on to attack the enemy, and became entangled in a giant spider's web. The dragon's servants bound the prince and brought him to their master, who ordered the prince into his mines to gather bright jewels. The dragon hoarded the jewels in darkness, not because he wanted to look at them but only to make certain that no one else had them.

Many years passed for the prince in these caves. His once tall form became bent and scarred from work and beatings. He became pale from rarely seeing the sun.

At first, he was ruled by anger and hatred. He vowed revenge on the dragon and tried to escape several times, only to be caught, beaten, and returned to the mines.

Slowly, through much suffering, his pride began to die, and he began to see his own stupidity and ignorance. He saw that it had been his own pride that had brought him to this place.

A day came when, whilst digging, he found a way out of the caves and into the daylight. For many days, he travelled through the dark woods, carefully avoiding the dragon's servants and soldiers and slaves. He had no weapon with which to fight, and was also too weak to fight. Finally, he came to the borders of his father's kingdom.

His father welcomed him with great joy, for he had not known where his son had gone, and had thought him lost and dead. When, many years later, the king died, the prince took the throne and ruled with wisdom equal to his honoured father's.

(By A. Thacker)

Cheer up! Let's listen to a popular song and feel happy

Don't worry, be happy!

Here is a little song I wrote

You might want to sing it note for note Don’t worry, be happy

In every life we have some trouble When you worry you make it double

Don't worry, be happy

Be happy now

Refrain: Uh, Don’t worry

Uh, Be happy

Uh, Don't worry, be happy

Ain't got no place to lay your head Somebody came and took your bed

Don't worry, be happy

The landlord say your rent is late He may have to litigate

Don't worry, be happy

Look at me, I’m happy

Refrain:

Ain't got no cash, ain't got no style Ain't got no gal to make you smile But don’t worry, be happy

'Cause when you worry your face will frown

And that will bring everybody down So don't worry, be happy

Don't worry, be happy now

Now there is this song I wrote

I hope you learned it note for note Like good little children

Don't worry, be happy

Listen to what I sing:

In your life you expect some trouble When you worry you make it double

Don't worry, be happy

Be happy now

Refrain:

(Here he speaks)

Don't worry, don’t worry.

Don't do it, be happy.

Put a smile on your face.

Don't bring everybody down like this. Don't worry, it will soon pass, whatever it is. Don't worry, be happy!
