Canada is the second largest country in the world. It is the Federal Multiparty Parliamentary State with Constitutional monarchy. It covers the northern part of North

America and its total area is 9.975.000 square kilometers. Its population is about 32.186.000. The major cities in Canada are Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, the capital, Calgary and Quebec.

Canada's only neighbour is the USA. The border between two countries is the longest unguarded border in the world.

The word Canada comes from one of the Red Indian languages “Kannata”, meaning “a number of huts” (village).

Canada’s motto “From Sea to Sea” is paricularly appropriate because the country is bounded by three oceans — the Pacific, the Arctic and the Atlantic. Its vast area includes some of the world’s largest lakes and countless smaller ones. One-third of all fresh water on the Earth is in Canada.

As Canada extends for thousands of miles all kinds of weather conditions and scenery are to be found there.

Canada is often called the “Land of the Maple Leaf the maple leaf is the national emblem of Canada. The story of Canada goes back over 400 years. The French were the first settlers to this country. In 1759 Canada became part of the British Empire. In 1931 it was Independence from Britain.

Today Canada is an independent federative state, consisting of 10 provinces and 2 territories. It is a member of the Commonwealth headed by the Queen of Great Britain. Her representative in Canada is the Governor General whom she appoints on the advice of the Canadian Prime Minister. The Governor's duties are limited to symbolic, most ceremonial acts. The real power belongs to the Prime Minister and his Cabinet.

There are two official languages in the country English and French. All Canadian children have to learn both French and English at school but Francophones and Anglophones do not enjoy learning each other's language. “We have two races, two languages, two systems of religious belief two sets of laws... two systems of everything”, said one Canadian journalist. There was a time when Quebec Province (its population is 90% French) decided to separate from Canada and form a new country. Fortunately, the movement has waned.

Canada is a world leader in value of mineral exports and produces and exports many of the mineral needed for modem industrial economics. Its soils are intensively utilized and make Canada one of the world’s largest exporters of agricultural products. Forests cover much of the land so Canada is a leading supplier of lumber, pulp, paper arid wood products.
