Конец эпохи динозавров часто для краткости называют «рубежом К-Т»: «К» – от немецкого слова «kreide», мел, обозначает меловой период, а Т – от третичного периода.

В 1980 г. группа под руководством отца и сына Луиса и Уолтера Альваресов из Калифорнийского университета попыталась измерить соотношение разных химических элементов в тонкой глинистой границе К-Т. Их интересовали те, что чаще встречаются в составе метеоритов, чем в земной коре, например, иридий.

Результаты оказались совершенно неожиданными. Концентрация искомых элементов на границе К-Т зашкалила далеко за те показатели, которые получились бы в случае периодического высыпания метеоритной пыли. Так, например, по иридию на разных участках наблюдалось 40-330-кратное превышение нормы.

Единственное приемлемое объяснение группа Альваресов видела в метеоритном воздействии. Метеорит 10±4 км в поперечнике вполне мог оставить то количество иридия, которое было найдено в темной глинистой прослойке К-Т.

CONSULTING AGREEMENT

THIS AGREEMENT (hereinafter referred to as the “Agreement”) made by and between the Board of Regents of the University System of the State by and on behalf of the State University (hereinafter referred to as “the University”), and
