Development of the connection between the artist and the environment in portrait composition
The portrait image has always been regarded as an essential part of a person's environment, a window into society, a document of the era. "The progress of painting, starting with its imperfect experiments, is to refine to a portrait," G. Hegel argued.
In the context of the difference between the connections of the portrait image with the natural environment, it is possible to compare the paintings of K. Monet and I.N. Kramsky on a similar plot: "A lady under an umbrella": portrayed as part of the natural environment by K. Monet (Fig. 9) and the intrinsic value of the portrait image in the natural environment by I.N. Kramsky (Fig. 10).
According to P.A. Fedotov, the portrait should be a historical picture, where the main person is involved in the plot action. Accordingly, if we are talking about a self-portrait, it is extremely important how the artist sees himself in the natural and social environment.

If in Gustave Courbet's realistic painting "Bonjour, Monsieur Courbet!" ("Hello, Mr. Courbet", Fig. 11), the artist proudly demonstrates how much respect and honor he enjoys among such notable people as philanthropist A. Bruyat. And in the painting "Bonjour, Monsieur Gauguin!" ("Hello, Mr. Gauguin", Fig. 12), made as a plot allusion to Courbet's painting, Paul Gauguin emphasizes his detachment, isolation from the people around him, the "impenetrability" of his inner world.

All the elements of the environment - symmetrically arranged, zigzagging
trees, fence rods, the frontal reversal of the figure of the master, whitish bushes like clouds, the roof of the white house peeping over the hill – work for a figurative representation of the bifurcation of worlds, the hatching of a plan in the inner world of the artist.
