Best Kept Secret is the third book in the series, after Only Time Will Tell and The Sins of the Father, and revolves around the two central families, the Cliftons and the Barringtons…. Picking up where The Sins of the Father left off, readers discover whether Giles Barrington or Harry Clifton will inherit the late Hugo Barrington's fortune, the title and all that therein is. The Lord Chancellor is to deliver a decision and to stop the unfolding drama once and for good (all). He decides not to set a bad precedent and comes down in favour of Giles. The ruling allows Harry to marry Emma. They are about to adopt a daughter with a secret past to join their son Sebastian. Harry is in the prime of his career as a detective thriller writer, and Emma juggles her young family and her efforts to earn some serious management cred, in a bid to gain the upper hand using her share of the Barrington shipping business, at a time when women were not really encouraged to be on the … of companies. Poor smitten, likeable Giles, fighting for his political life as a member of Parliament, is lovesick for the scheming, vindictive woman Virginia.

With all her usual importunity, Claire didn’t miss the chance to jump in our conversation with Tom. She was determined to find out who started that annoying rumour about her divorce. Her friends, well, to put it bluntly, even her parents and sisters, were terribly drained from this unfolding drama, that had been torturing them for a very long time. Someone said that Claire had a dalliance with her husband’s friend – what an obscenity! The priesthood of marriage failed to remain intact, and everybody knew it, as well as Claire’s husband, who ran out of patience and decided to bring this heinous shame to an end.

- Leave me out of it, Claire, I’m not in the mood for discussing your being ripped apart life.

- Don’t you even feel for me, Michael? My life is a true nightmare!

- You reap what you sow, - said I, trying to hide my disgust.
