Western Visions of Beauty: a Philosophical Introduction
A conceptual introduction to Western Art through visits to some of St. Petersburg’s Museums and places of interests. Analytical tools of higher level thinking to be developed in response to classics of the world´s philosophy, art and literature: Plato (Universals, the Beautiful, and Love), Rumi (Mystical Happiness and the Meaning of Life), Dostoyevsky-Nietzsche (Existentialistic Authenticity and Despair), Goethe (Art and Social Development in 18th and 19th Century Germany), and the Iconography of Byzantine, Russian, Central Asian and East Asian (Japan, Indian, Tibetan) Art; "the concept of beauty as in terms of 'measure' as a mean (arete), from the aesthetics of Pythagoreans to contemporary phenomenologist such as Terry Eagleton, the aesthetic (aisthesis) as a discourse of the body, a revolt against the tyranny of theoria; "harmony" as the quintessence of Sinism (related to Daoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism). Finally, the semnar investigates the classical genesis of the aesthetic creativity in contemporary Russian arts and literature in St. Petersburg.
