Text 3 the accrediting council on education in journalism and mass communications (acejmc)
The structure to evaluate and accredit journalism and mass communication programs in the USA was first established in 1945. The Council originally was an association of journalism education and newspaper organizations. The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) is a voluntary agency that strives to stimulate and encourage sound educational programs in the field of journalism and mass communications. Its membership now include national and international associations representing newspapers, broadcasting, advertising, photo journalism, public relations, professional societies, and education in journalism and mass communications. Membership is open to all associations of educators or professionals that are involved with the professional education of students.
The Council is assisted in its work by the office and executive director, an Accrediting Committee, an Executive Committee, teams that conduct site visits, and the Appeal Board. The Accrediting Committee is composed of journalism and mass communications educators and industry representatives whose job is to advise it on the accreditation status of journalism and mass communications units. The Committee meets each spring to make its recommendations.
The members of the visiting team are people competent to evaluate the units and curricular offered by a particular institutions.
The Council makes decisions about the accreditation of visited units, the periodic revision of its standards and procedures, and the publication of information about accreditation of journalism and mass communications programs. The Council usually meets twice a year.
The ACEJMC applies 9 standards in evaluating university programs: mission, governance and administration, curriculum and instruction, diversity and inclusiveness, full-time and part-time faculty; scholarship; research, creative and professional activity; students service; resources, facilities and equipment; professional and public services; assessment of learning outcome. The ACEJMC has awarded accreditation in 109 universities and college programs of study in journalism and mass communications.
