Exercise 1. Read the text and try to describe one of the three main specialties of PNRPU.

Technical Perm

Life in Perm is closely linked with the local industry. The date of the founding of the city is the official start date of construction of Egoshihinsk copper-smelting plant on May 4, 1723. Throughout its history the city has been famous for its powerful industry, high productivity and quality products.

Today Perm remains one of the economic centers of Russia. In 2012 a rating of the most promising cities in Russia was published in the ’Russian Reporter’ magazine where Perm featured in 4th place. According to Rosstat (Russian statistics bureau), industrial and economic indicators of Perm are constantly increasing.

Development of priority specialties at PNRPU is in close connection with the development of industrial enterprises of the region:

Aircraft engine building and gas turbine technologies

Scientific research and development of PNRPU:

increasing the reliability and life of aircraft and rocket engines and power systems:

reduction in fuel consumption, improved environmental performance (noise reduction, reduction in pollutant emissions and greenhouse gases).

Production and refining of oil, gas and minerals

Scientific research and development of PNRPU:

geological structure analysis and assessment of the possibility of integrated development of mineral resources;

development of resource efficient technologies for simultaneous development of oil and potassium-magnesium salts;

processing of hydrocarbons, salts, alkalis and slop products;

associated hydrocarbon gas and wastewater filtering;

development of principles and methods of forecasting the oil and gas content of geostructures using statistic and probability models for different various geological areas.

Nanotechnology

Scientific research and development of PNRPU:

creation of powder metallurgy products;

development of technologies of permeable ceramics with nanoto microcontrolled porosity, nanopowder materials and nanostructured coatings.

Urban studies

Scientific research and development of PNRPU:

urban planning and development of infrastructure (water supply and wastewater treatment, heat and power supply, transportation, industrial and civil engineering, consumption and production waste management):

new development directions for mono towns;

environmental risk management, techno sphere safety;

development of innovative technologies in the field of informatization of modern urban development and service-oriented technologies.

Prospective direction for cooperation with strategic partners:

Cooperation in the educational process (coordination of targeted training of specialists for industrial enterprises, attracting leading specialists of the enterprises to the development of the educational process, holding ’industry days' at PNRPU, development of programs to support students, postgraduate students and young teachers by a I locating individual grants).

Scientific activity of departments (carrying out of complex scientific research works, active involvement of scientists and scientific schools in solving of the problems of potassium producing enterprises).

Improvement of material and technical resources of PNRPU (creation of specialized laboratories, active introduction of media resources to the education process).

The Perm Krai

The Perm region was formed on the 3d of October 1938, by division of the Sverdlovsk region. It was in Priuralye, partly on the western slopes of the Urals. 68 % are covered by forest. The main river is the Kama. The climate is tempered (the average January temperature is 15–18 °C below zero, July – 16–18 °C above zero). The area of the region was 160,2 thousand sq. km. The capital was Perm. The region included the KomiPermyak autonomous area. There were 25 towns in the region.

Potash and other fertilizers, petroleum, gas, coal, peat, gold, iron and copper ores, mineral water are extracted in the region.

The former Perm region is a highly developed industrial area. The main industries are: machine-building; chemical: petro-chemical and oilrefining; ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy; timber; pulp and paper; food; glass; printing. Machine-building is the prime industry.

The turbo-generator in Lysva, the cable works in Perm were constructed in the 50s – 60s. The old works Alexandrovsk, Kungur, Otcher, Pavlosky, Yugo-Kamsky were relocated in Tchajkovsky. The main enterprises of metallurgy are situated in Chusovoy (ferroalloys and springs are produced), Lysva (steel leaf, tinware), Nytva (bimetals). Solikamsk Mag-

nesium Works and Berezniki Titanium and Magnesium Works are the only enterprises of this profile in Russia.

The Perm Krai is one of the leading areas of wood industry. The timber-felling sites are generally in the north and north-east of the region.

The Perm Krai is the biggest paper supplier. Perm Goznak Factory and Krasnokamsk Paper Works are the manufactures in the region. Perm is included in the Urals energetical system. There are lots of hydro-electric and other power stations in the region. The region specializes in potato cultivation. Rail and water transport dominate in the region.
