Summary

As fanfiction translation has likely not yet been examined before on an international scholarly level in a greater detail, this thesis’ adopted a broader approach in order to serve as an introduction to this fan translation practice and explore the phenomenon on the community level, using the Czech and Slovak fanfiction scene as an example.

It operates with the assumption that fanfiction translation is, especially in terms of the community dimension, more closely tied to the fanfiction writing practice and fanfiction online space than it is to other forms of fan translation, such as fansubbing or fan videogame localization, and therefore uses definitions and theoretical concepts related to fanfiction writing to establish and identify its themes, practices and historical framework.

The theoretical part focuses on defining fanfiction as its main subject, using the particular definitions to point out various aspects of fanfiction translation to discuss later, and specifying the basic time frame. The historical overview provides a brief history of fanfiction and fandom with paying special attention to the specifics of the Czech/Slovak Republic.

The first chapters of the main part are focused on analysing the relevant international and then Czech/Slovak online fanfiction translation space through various examples, with the aim to highlight various aspects and facets of the fanfiction translation community space, such as whether and how various archive sites allow the translators to mark their stories as a translation, link to the original story or recommend their translated stories.

The final chapter consists of a questionnaire analysis conducted among 76 Czech/Slovak fanfiction translators, providing some brief demographic data and focusing on several general areas (such as linguistic background, motivation, the question of quality etc.) through a number of both yes/no and freeform questions, each accompanied with a brief discussion on the selected topic, bringing to attention possible parallels or points from the relevant secondary literature, often related to other forms of fan translation, and suggesting possibilities for further research.

Resumé

Překladu fanfiction, jakožto formě fanouškovského překladu beletrie, zatím nebyl v akademickém prostředí věnován téměř žádný prostor, na rozdíl od ostatních forem fanouškovského překladu, jako jsou amatérské titulky k seriálům/filmům nebo amatérské překlady počítačových her.

Tato práce se tudíž na fenomén překladu fanfiction dívá z širšího pohledu s cílem představit tuto fanouškovskou aktivitu v širších souvislostech a s naznačením veškerých jejich aspektů a dimenzí, a to konkrétně na příkladu českého a slovenského fanfiction prostředí.

Předmět zkoumání se vymezuje prostřednictvím definicí fanfiction, jak tematicky, tak časovým uchopením, a vypíchnutím možných oblastí relevantních právě pro překlad. Druhý oddíl teoretické části se věnuje historickému přehledu fanfiction, vymezuje klíčový časový předěl a přihlíží k československým historickým specifikům.

První kapitoly hlavní části s využitím částečně historické perspektivy zkoumají podrobněji mezinárodní a posléze české a slovenské online fanfiction prostředí s důrazem na to, jak zohledňuje překlad fanfiction, jakou v něm překlad fanfiction hraje roli a jak se v něm mohou překladatelé jako autoři specifického obsahu uplatnit. Cílem je ukázat pevnou provázanost praxe překladu fanfiction s praxí psaní fanfiction a silný důraz na komunitní charakter těchto fanouškovských aktivit.

Závěrečnou kapitolou je analýza dotazníku s odpověďmi od 76 překladatelů fanfiction. Přináší některé základní demografické údaje, ale zejména prostřednictvím konkrétních otázek z několika okruhů (věnovaných jazykové stránce, motivaci, otázkám kvality, komentování atd.) a jejich odpovědí podrobněji a s využitím sekundární literatury rozebírá témata, která byla nastolena v předešlých kapitolách.

Výstupem je i naznačení oblastí, které mají zejména při využití etnografických metod potenciál pro další výzkum.
