The Horse in Motion – 1878

The Horse in Motion is not technically the first movie, but it is a landmark moment in the history of cinema. It was made back in 1878 in San Francisco and is sometimes considered the first movie ever made.

It was made by a photographer Eadweard Muybridge, who was trying to figure out how horses run for particular research about horses. He used a lot of cameras to take pictures of them running, which he put later together in a sequence. This was the time he realized he just made a motion picture. It was a really hard work, but it paid off, because The Horse in Motion became famous all over the world.

Even though it is very old and not very exciting to watch now, it’s important to remember that it was one of the first steps in the evolution of movies. Without The Horse in Motion we might not have all the amazing and developed movies we have now.

The Birth of a Nation – 1915

The Birth of a Nation is another very important movie when it comes to evolution of American Cinema. It was made in 1915. It’s about the American Civil War and what happened after it. The movie was famous because it introduced a lot of new things to the film industry, such as showing things up close, fading in and out, and showing different things happening at the same time. It was also one of the first movies with a length of more than an hour.

Even though the movie was technically impressive, it’s also very controversial because it depicts African Americans in a really bad way. It makes them look violent and mean, and it makes white people look like heroes. Nowadays it is considered that the movie is racist and should not be shown anymore.

Soviet Montage – 1920s

Another topic I want to mention is Soviet Montage. As you can already tell, it was not created in America, but I consider it important to notice, because it influenced it a lot.

While creating the Soviet Montage, it was the first time people started talking about the association between the pictures. It was developed in the Soviet Union in the 1920s. It was an entirely new idea that influenced all the following movies.

Experimenting with the Soviet Montage for the first time, filmmakers showed the audience different pictures put together and asked them about what they were thinking while seeing the images. They showed them an expressionless man following with a picture of soup and people thought he’s hungry. They used the picture of the same man following with a photo of woman and people thought he’s feeling lust. The same with a little girl in a coffin when people thought he’s feeling sad.

Creators of this technique believed that movies should not just tell a story, but also have a message. Soviet Montage was used to make movies about important social and political issues. Filmmakers wanted to make the audience think about what they could do to make things better.

The Jazz Singer – 1927

While all of that was happening in the Soviet Union, in America there was something completely else in the process of creation. It was the sound. All the movies before were silent. You could hear music in some, but no talking or sound effects. The Jazz Singer is a movie that changed all of that. It was made in 1927 and was labelled as a “talkie”. Back then “talkie” was referred to a movie with sound.

The movie was about a young man named Jakie Rabinowitz who wanted to be a jazz singer, but his father wanted him to follow in the family tradition and become a cantor, a religious singer. The conflict between the two characters and their desires was shown through the use of sound and music, which was a new and exciting way of storytelling.

The Jazz Singer was a huge success, and it changed the movie industry forever. People loved being able to hear actors speak and sing, and it opened up a whole new world of possibilities for filmmakers. That’s why we can take sound in the movies today for granted.

The history of film in US reaches as far back as ancient Greece’s theatre and dance, which had many of the same elements in today’s film world. But technological advances in film have occurred rapidly over the past 100 years. many camera devices, projectors and film sizes have been developed and mastered, creating the film industry we know today.

Walter Elias Disney (December 5, 1901 – December 15, 1966)

He was an American animator, film producer and entrepreneur. A pioneer of the American animation industry, he introduced several developments in the production of cartoons.
