About the School of Law
The School of Law at Queen Mary University of London is one of six law schools in the federal University of London.
Excellent research
We are firmly established as a centre of national and international excellence in legal study and research. The School is ranked seventh in the England and third in London for Law, based on the percentage of our staff rated 3* & 4* (4* being the highest) in the UK government 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, denoting research excellence of international importance.
Student satisfaction
Following continued successes in various league table rankings, The School of Law at Queen Mary recently excelled in the Guardian’s University Guide 2014. The School was ranked third in London for law and sixth in the UK. The Times Good University

Guide 2013 and placed us third in London and eighth overall in the UK. In the National Student Survey (NSS) 2012, the School of Law scored 92 per cent for student satisfaction.
About the School of Law
The School of Law consists of two departments:
The Department of Law covers the full spectrum of legal studies and is based at the University's Mile End campus.
The Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS) specialises in the knowledge and skills in commercial law that can be placed at the service of government, public bodies, overseas institutions, the legal profession, industry and commerce. CCLS is based in Lincoln's Inn Fields.
Our staff
Our academic staff are actively involved in public affairs in the UK, European institutions and international bodies, and have leading roles in legal scholarship.We have close links with law firms and leading members of the law professions in the UK and overseas. Some are involved in our teaching and others support students and activities within the school.
Events
We organise major conferences, workshops and seminars and opportunities for continuing professional development (CPD).
Service to the community
We continue Queen Mary's long-standing tradition of service to the local community. Our undergraduate Legal Advice Centre is run with the help of students from the School of Law and offers free legal advice to members of the public.
The breadth, depth and excellence of research activity in the School of Law earned us a highest possible rating of 5* in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2001), placing us among the top eight law schools in the UK. We consolidated our 2001 position in the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) as being ranked seventh in England, based on 60 per cent of our research activity classed as world-leading (4* the highest score possible) or internationally excellent (3*). quality takes into account the quality of research outputs, research environment and esteem indicators.
We adopt a wide spectrum of approaches to legal research, including doctrinal, theoretical, applied, comparative, historical, sociological, empirical and interdisciplinary perspectives. Members of the School of Law are actively involved in public affairs in the UK, European institutions and international bodies, and have leading roles in legal scholarship.

The School of Law at Queen Mary University of London offers a
wide range of full, part-time and distance learning flexible postgraduate research and taught courses to more than 800 students from all over the world. The breadth and depth of our expertise enables us to offer courses and supervision in virtually all major branches of law. The presence of the Centre for Commercial Law Studies in the School of Law provides a particular strength in the field of commercial law. Queen Mary has built a reputation for its blend of academic and practical approaches on the postgraduate programmes, enabling students to gain both practical insights, along with the theories and concepts behind topical and sometimes controversial issues via debate and discussion with leading academics and practitioners.

There are more than 160 postgraduate law research students in the School of Law, you can view profiles of many of our current PhD students to see their research topics, supervisors and working titles. During term time we run a series of PhD research seminars.
Law Careers Service for Postgraduates
Completing a postgraduate law qualification at Queen Mary can be an excellent way to consolidate and enhance your legal experience whether you intend to practise in your own country or to develop an international legal career. Senior practitioners and academics from leading law firms, chambers and other universities contribute on our programmes, providing excellent networking opportunities for our students.

Accommodation
We have reserved accommodation for our students with some of the UK’s leading student accommodation providers, who pride themselves in ensuring you have a safe, comfortable place to live while you’re studying at The University of Law. Not only that, but by staying in Universitynominated accommodation you’ll get to meet students studying at universities across the city, as well as live with your fellow students.

Guaranteed accommodation
We guarantee an offer of accommodation to all first year undergraduate students who have accepted their offer of a place and have made us their firm choice. You must normally confirm that you want accommodation by the 31 March of the year you're looking to start your degree. Please note that all arrangements and the entire contract for your accommodation is between you and the nominated accommodation provider. If you apply after this date we will still provide support to help you find suitable accommodation.

Accommodation is usually in shared flats or, in some cases, selfcontained studios. Flats are usually shared with three, four or five other University of Law undergraduate students. Typically you’ll have a shared kitchen/dining room, including fridge-freezer, oven, hob, dishwasher, kettle and microwave. Usually there’s a separate shared lounge area with comfy sofas and TV, some with inclusive Sky satellite channels. You’ll have your own fully furnished bedroom, which will typically include a large desk area and an en-suite bathroom.
On-site laundries are available at most locations, and on-site gyms at some. 24-hour security is taken extremely seriously at all our accommodation sites. Door entry and intercom systems restrict access and CCTV surveillance gives added protection. Most accommodation sites have dedicated accommodation management staff available onsite to help you. For further assistance, some centres have student wardens, usually second-year students who are happy to provide extra support, especially if you’re living away from home for the first time.
As an indication, for 2012/2013, weekly rental costs are £178 per week in London and £89 to £120 per week for our centres outside London.

Entry requirements for UK students
To be considered for a place on our LLB (Hons) Law degree you must have achieved three A-levels at grades ABB (320 UCAS points) or equivalent, plus GCSE English Language and Maths at grade C or above or equivalent. We will also accept two A-Levels plus an equivalent qualification.
This is based on the minimum standards required by law firms for entry onto their training contracts.
Subject requirements and recommendations
We do not have standard A-level subject requirements. However, you should be aware that in practice, some law firms prefer candidates with 'hard' A-level subjects to those with 'soft' A-level subjects.
We do not accept A-level Critical Thinking or General Studies.

Alternative qualifications
As well as A-levels, we also accept a range of other alternative equivalent qualifications which are listed below. If your qualification isn't listed or you require further information and advice on entry requirements please contact our admissions team on 0800 289997 or contact us.
The most usual entry criteria for The University of Law's LLB (Hons) Law degree is ABB at GCE A level. Some equivalent acceptable international qualifications are set out in the table below. You will be required to provide documentary proof of your qualification(s).

The 2010 law school rankings were consolidated from two surveys, The Complete University Guide and Times Online's Good Uni-
versity Guide. While the two surveys disagreed with ranking order, five universities were consistently at the top of both surveys.
The Complete University Guide's ranking criteria are student satisfaction, research assessment, entry standards and graduate prospects. Times Online's Good University Guide's ranking criteria are research quality, entry standards, a national student survey and graduate prospects.
1. Oxford
o The University of Oxford has over 20,000 students, including 8,701 postgraduates. Under the Times Online's Good University Guide, Oxford is given an 87 percent for graduate prospects and ranks No. 2 overall within UK law schools. The faculty of law at the University of Oxford has courses including commercial law, comparative law, criminal law, environmental law and human rights law.
