Near there is a favourite area of rest, Semyonovskoye lake. It is simply crammed during sunny days in summer. People enjoy swimming in cool water and sunbathing. Children can enjoy modern merry-go-rounds and attractions.
Next to the lake there is the building of Regional Palace of creativity of children and the youth “Laplandiya”. The Palace was constructed in 1985. It offers a lot of clubs and extra-curricular activities for schoolchildren.
Murmansk Oceanarium – Europe’s only aquarium complex on the study of arctic seals, which solves complex problems of environmental education and public education. A pleasant surprise for the guests of the oceanarium is a beautiful and informative laser movie about Arctic pinnipeds.
Not far from Semyonovskoye lake there is a beautiful memorial complex “To the Seamen who died in peacetime”. Architects of the memorial are N. Kireeva and N. Bogdanova. The memorial was opened in October 5, 2002. Architectural dominant of the memorial complex is hexagonal tower lighthouse 17.5 m high. Wide marble staircase with viewpoints lead to the lighthouse on both sides. On the upper platform there is Church of the Savior on Waters.
Near the lighthouse the ship anchor is set with the capsule with seawater planted beneath. In the lighthouse on the ground floor there is open-room museum of memory. On the five walls of the museum there are memorial plates in the memory of sailors of different fleets who at sea in peacetime. There are books of condolence in the museum.
A cabin of nuclear submarine “Kursk” became the part of the memorial complex “To seamen who died in peace time”, and is installed near the
Church of the “Savior on Waters”. Opening of the memorial took place on July, 26 2009 on the Day of the Navy. Nuclear submarine “Kursk” sank in the Barents Sea on August 12, 2000 after an explosion on board during preparation for simulated torpedo attack. All 118 people on board died. In 2001, as a result of large-scale international operations the submarine was raised from the seabed, delivered to the factory in settlement Roslyakovo, where it was shipped to Snezhnogorsk for recycling. The only thing that was left is the cabin of the submarine.

Marine Orthodox Church “Savior on waters” was built on donations from the residents of the city of Murmansk in 2002. In the church there are icons of Christ walking on the waters, of the northern saints, wonderworkers and helpers of the sailors – St. Tryphon of Pechenga and Barlaam of Keret Lake, Mother of God, the Apostle of the Slavs – St. Andrew and righteous Admiral Fyodor Ushakov and others.
The Sea port is the main gate of Murmansk, taking the ships under the flags of various countries in all seasons. Our city is the port of different vessels. Among them is the pride of Russian Northern Fleet: nuclear ice-breakers.
Nuclear-powered icebreaker “Lenin” is the world’s first nuclear-powered on-water vessel with nuclear installation. The icebreaker was constructed in the Soviet Union, primarily to serve the Northern Sea Route. Launched on December 5, 1957. Due to the large capacity of the nuclear installation and high autonomy, the icebreaker showed excellent performance during the first navigation. The use of the nuclear-powered icebreaker had significantly prolonged navigation. Only in first 6 years of operation the icebreaker made more than 82 thousand nautical miles and independently escorted more than 400 vessels. Icebreaker “Lenin” worked for 30 years and in 1989 she was decommissioned and moored in the city of Murmansk. Currently icebreaker “Lenin” functions as a museum.
