7. Polarnye Zori

7.1. Introduction

Polarnye Zori is a town located in the southern part of the Cape. Kola, in the vicinity of Lake Pinoziero and the river Niwa. It is one of the youngest cities in the region because it received city rights in 1991 [23]. It was built in 1968 as a settlement near an existing nuclear power plant that supplies the Murmansk region with electricity. The curious fact of the city is that it is the northernmost city in which no polar night appears. On the shortest day of December 22, the sun shines 21 minutes [23]. The city has about 15 thousand inhabitants. The city is located near the railroad route to Murmansk and St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg, serving international connections. Along with the railway station. The main companies are Atomic and Water Power Plants [23]. In the city are built sports complexes (ski, swimming and other). Walking around the city feels like it was designed with a big momentum. There are plenty of green spaces, squares, squares, wide alleys, residential buildings built largely from large plates are painted with nice vivid colors, which is a possibility in the entire Murmansk Oblast. The city looks neat, clean and tidy, although it seems that the best times are over. Visible it is both on the streets, appearing empty. The city is located in the neighborhood of Candelas in the south of the city. Kola has a much milder climate than other places described. It also seems to be less humid than in the Candelas on the White Sea. These factors have a positive impact on the residents of the city, which, for reasons of location and aesthetics, is the most attractive place to live in the region. The problem is probably the focus only on the energy industry. The absence of other forms of industry results in a very limited number of jobs, which can have a negative impact on demographic conditions, characterized by a record decline in the number of inhabitants (from 20,000 in 2001) and a stable level of 15,000 [2, 9, 11, 15, 16, 17].

7.2. Preparation of test samples

Field studies were carried out in the city center where the elevation of buildings and their inventory were assessed. Photographic documentation (fig. 7.5, fig. 7.7) was also made, and then the samples were taken with binocular and optical microscope in reflected light. Subsequently, these samples were examined in a microscope by scanning electron microscope and subjected to chemical tests using ICP-OAS and ASA. These results have been mathematically developed.

146

7.3. Test results

Field studies have shown that most buildings are built of soBig disc. As in all other cities these houses are rather underpaid, but it is noted that at least the highest in the city center are very nicely painted. This immediately gives the impression of beating heat, causing a completely different character of the city compared to the others on the Kola (fig. 7.5). Just like in the other cities of the north, and here is a big problem of freezing and physical ventilation. It manifests itself by crushing the building material into which the moisture gets wet, breaking the walls. Fortunately, most Polar Zoras are well maintained and this situation is marginal.

Microscopic studies have shown some differences between the plaster samples tested. They are visible in the paint (red in sample 04, fig. 7.6) and the various paint particles (samples 02, 03, 05, 06, 09), sand grains (samples 01, 03, 04, 10) and solids (samples 02 As well as metallic dust (samples 03–06, 09) as well as plants (samples 03, 06, 07) as well as precipitates (gypsum in sample 05, carbonates in samples 08 and 10).

Barite admixture was also found in sample 08. Microelectrode studies using EDS enabled determination of carbon compounds in sample 07, furthermore sulfur compounds (samples 02, 04.05, 08.10), chlorine (samples 04.08–10) , And phosphorus (samples 02, 08.09, fig. 7.8, tab. 7.1–7.10). Metals such as iron (samples 01–07, 09, 10), titanium (samples 02–04 and 08–10) and zinc (sample 07) were also found. Studies of the accumulated pollutants found by EDS (fig. 7.1) have shown that most of them are found in samples 02, 04, 08–10 respectively from Ul Energetyków 24, Stroitieli 8, Lomonosowa 7, 13, 19

(fig. 7.1–7.10).

Fig. 7.1. Compilation of pollutants in plaster samples tested from Polarnye Zori

147

Studies by ICP-OAS and ASA showed the content of selected metals in plaster samples (fig. 7.2). Maximum zinc values were recorded for a sample of Pz10–320 ppm, for a Pz09–215ppm sample from Łomonosov Street, and Pz04–167ppm (Stroitielie and Łomonosov Stocks). For the remaining samples these values fluctuated in the area of 100ppm and the lowest was recorded in Pz05–77,40ppm (Belova ul). In the case of manganese, the highest values above 300ppm were found in the samples Pz02 and Pz07 (Kurchatova and Bielova) in the remaining samples. These values oscillated around 200ppm and the lowest 114ppm were recorded in the Pz04 (Stroitieley) sample. In the case of iron the highest values were measured in the sample Pz06–14378ppm (ul Sivko) and in samples Pz04, Pz05 (Stroiteley St), Pz09 (Ul. Lomonosowa) where they exceeded 10ty ppm. In the case of copper, the highest values were found in the sample Pz09 (32.5ppm, Łomonosowa Street), and in sample Pz06 (30.10ppm, ul Sivko) and Pz08 (28.80ppm, Łomonosowa Street). About 20ppm and in sample

Pz05 7.89ppm (Bilowa and Stroitieley) which was the lowest value. In the case of arsenic, the greatest pollutants were found in sample Pz03 (ul Stroiteley) 5.04 ppm in samples Pz01 (ul Energetikov) and Pz 06 (ul Sivko) at 4ppm, the remaining samples were between 2 and 3 ppm and lowest The value of 2.23ppm was recorded for the sample Pz09 (Łomonosov Street). In the case of lead the highest concentration was found in the sample Pz10 (Łomonosova ul) 41.60 ppm. Relatively high values were also found in the sample of Pz06 (ul Sivko) 30.10ppm. In the remaining samples, these values were lower and the lowest 3.96ppm was found in the Pz02 sample. In the case of nickel, the highest values of 30.20 ppm were measured in the Pz03 sample from Stroiteley and Pz01 ul (power plants) with a value of 26.60 ppm and in the Pz09 sample (Łomonosowa

Street) 21.20. In the remaining samples, these values remained at 15 ppm and the lowest were recorded in sample Pz07–7.84 ppm. Chromium was most found in the sample of Pz01 (ul energeticki) 30,80ppm in the remaining samples, these values were lower in the range of 20ppm. The lowest value of 8.95 was found in sample Pz07. In the case of titanium, the highest values were found for samples Pz09 and Pz10 above 3tys ppm, in samples Pz01–Pz07 they were within 2tys ppm and for sample Pz08 1819ppm which was the lowest result. In the case of cadmium, these values in many samples were significant marginal in samples Pz03-Pz07 (except Pz05). The highest cadmium concentration of 2.95ppm was found in sample Pz03.

By studying the trends in the proportion of metal concentrations in Polar Zori plasters, it can be stated that they are closest to titanium (1.81), arsenic (2.26) and manganese (2.67), while for copper (4.11) and Zinc (4.18) were slightly larger and the highest for lead (10.50) and cadmium although the latter absolute values were not high (fig 7.3).

7.4. Discussion

Field studies have shown that in the city the working part of the buildings is built of a large panel, they are nicely painted, renovated. Façade research has shown that corrosion has also occurred in some places, which has resulted in the appearance of precipitates (gypsum, carbonate) and the entry of plants. In addition, microscale studies have shown the presence of such dopants as phosphates, chlorine and iron, zinc titanium. Studies using ICP-OAS have confirmed these results. The zinc contamination analysis correlates with the main streets, and above all Łomonosowa Street, where these values are the highest. In the case of arsenic, it was most pronounced at the entrance to the city where the largest traffic is taking place (Ul Energetyków). The values of copper and iron were highest at the main streets (Lomonosov) and Sivko Street. The

situation is similar with lead, nickel and chromium. In the case of cadmium, these values were low for the whole city, although the highest rates were found at Stroiteley and Bielova Streets. High values of many metals were found for other streets such as Energetików, Lomonosowa, Kurchatova, Stroitely, Sivko, where the main traffic takes place in the city.

Fig. 7.4. Cumulative Pollution Value Chart for Polarnye Zori City

By examining the cumulative value graph (fig. 7.4), the highest content of dopants was found in sample 06 and in neighboring areas corresponding to the streets of Sivko and Lomonov. In other places these values are lower especially for the Pz01 and Pz02 trials from Energetyka and Kurchatova Streets. The main source of pollution in the city can be circular traffic [1, 3–8, 10, 12–14, 18–22].

7.5. Results

Polarnye Zori is a small town on Kola Wharf, situated in a picturesque place, well-groomed with plenty of greenery. It hits the fact of painted houses in vivid colors, which is rare in Russia. Microscopic studies have shown that pigments and some solid impurities, including precipitates due to corrosion and water processes in building facades, are visible in plaster samples. Geochemical analyzes have shown some metal impurities such as zinc, lead, nickel, chrome although they are not very high. In the case of arsenic or cadmium rather low.
