10.9\ Sistrunk Procedure

10.9.1  Discussion

The Sistrunk procedure is performed for resection of thyroglossal duct cysts and neoplasms. The procedure includes removal of the variable

amounts of the central portion of the hyoid bone, following the cyst tract to the base of the tongue (Fig. 10.57). This surgical technique has not significantly changed since it was first described in 1920. Complications occur in 7.5% of cases and mainly include cyst recurrence and infection (Figs. 10.58 and 10.59).
