SOME FACTS OF THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE FUNCTIONING IN NORTH NORWAY AT THE TIME OF TSARIST RUSSIA
The article dwells on teaching and learning of Russian in North Norway in the second half of the 19th and early 20th century. The author gives an account of different strategies for acquiring knowledge of the Russian language among Norwegian merchants and traders and of the publication of the first dictionaries. He discusses a possible continuity between this early, economically motivated study of Russian and the establishment of Russian studies as an academic discipline in Norway in the early 20th century.
